Sclerotherapy is a procedure used to treat blood vessels by injecting special medicine into the vessels, which makes them shrink. Sclerotherapy is effective in treating spider veins and smaller varicose veins.

How does the treatment work?

Radiofrequency passes through the skin and is absorbed by the vein. The energy causes the vein to break up and be absorbed by the body.

How many treatments are required?

The majority of the treated veins will disappear within one to two treatments. Treatments are spaced six weeks apart, depending on the area under treatment. Additional treatments may be necessary to achieve the maximum effects and to treatment and new veins.

Most patients report a little discomfort and describe it as either as a mild burning sensation or similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin.

Is additional treatment necessary?

The number of treatments required for complete resolution will depends on the size of the vein and your body’s response to treatment. Future treatments may be necessary to remove new vein growth.

Before treatment:
Avoid sun tanning, tanning beds for 4-weeks prior to treatment. Discontinue Accutane® for 6-months prior to treatment, and Retin-A® for 6-weeks prior to treatment. Aspirin and other blood thinners should also be avoided for at least three days before treatment.

After treatment:
Wear compression socks when possible and use a cool compresses for your comfort. Avoid massaging the treated area. If your legs were treated, then keep your legs elevated for the day after treatment, and wear compression socks. Avoid the sun for at least two weeks after treatment.
